Shebag has recently updated its entire collection of square silk scarves. All pieces are the large 90cm x 90cm format, now refreshed to align with the latest designs from major luxury fashion houses.

Among all styles, Hermès offers the richest variety, and its silk scarves are considered the most complex in craftsmanship and the finest in raw materials.

First, the material. Hermès scarves are made of 100% mulberry silk, a type of silk fiber that is long, naturally lustrous, flexible, and strong. Hermès selects only top-grade long filament yarns, ensuring a silky-smooth touch and excellent durability. This allows the scarf to drape gracefully when worn.

Second, the weaving. Hermès scarves use high-density silk twill, with about 250 to 300 warp and weft threads per square centimeter—significantly denser than ordinary silk scarves, which usually range between 150 and 200 threads. This density makes the fabric soft yet structured, helping it retain its shape when styled.

In terms of craftsmanship, screen printing is the most distinctive feature. Each color requires its own stencil, and a complex scarf can involve 30 to 40 colors layered one after another. The entire printing process may take weeks or even months. Hermès develops its own dye formulations, ensuring vivid, saturated colors that resist fading under sunlight and remain vibrant even after many years.

The edges of Hermès scarves are entirely hand-rolled by skilled artisans. The rouleau hem is rolled inward and sewn with silk thread, producing a slightly tilted stitch and subtly raised edge. This is one of the most recognizable hallmarks of authenticity. By contrast, machine-stitched edges are flat and stiff.

As for thickness, the classic 90cm x 90cm Hermès scarf usually weighs 12 to 14 momme, which is the international standard for luxury silk scarves. At 12 momme, the fabric is light and soft, suitable for versatile styling. At 14 to 16 momme, it becomes denser with a stronger drape, often used in oversized squares, shawls, or limited editions. Ordinary silk scarves, by comparison, are usually 8 to 10 momme—thinner, prone to wrinkling, and lacking the dimensionality and durability of Hermès.
